The game versus Haverhill scheduled for Saturday 12 May was cancelled as we could not field a side. Despite having eleven players available for each of the cancelled games, the ongoing weather seeems to have dampened enthusiasm. We the sun is now out, so all hands to the pumps please for next weekend

Drought? – waterlogged pitch at Gt Braxted
Sunday’s game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. Since this is a cup match we will be rescheduling as soon as possible
Slow and slower – a story of two wickets
On Sunday 15th April saw the opening match of the Earls Colne Casuals against Wakes Colne and Chappel.
On a very very slow and low wicket and ridiculously slow outfield Earls Colne lost the toss and were invited to bat. The opening partnership of Ben Mason and Adam Page failed to score George Unwin and Chris Abrehart added 31 before the partnerhip was broken. Simon Boulton came to the wicket and played well for his 18 runs with an exquisite shot through mid wicket for 4 . Wakes Colne bowled extremely well on a wicket that helped all bowlers, Harry Callaghan defended vigorously with Earls Colne Colt Taylor Nicholson making his debut. Taylor played well with a straight bat and was unlucky to be run out by an excellent piece of fielding. This brought Olly Callaghan to the wicket and father and son batted together for 2 overs before Olly was caught behind the wicket. Harry Callaghan was caught for 13 trying to get Earls Colne over the 100 mark. The last wicket to fall was Tony Hayns who was clean bowled for one trying to hit a sharp offbreak over the top of cover. 24 extras was Earls Colne’s top scorer! Ben Mason opened the bowling for Colne and soon found his usual excellent line and length and removed one of the Wakes Colne openers clean bowled The next wicket to fall was taken by new Earls Colne debutant David Abrehart who bowled excellent line and length with some assistance off the wicket and took two quick wickets. Tony Hayns brought Simon Boulton into the attack Boulton soon found the edge of the bat and after a fumble by our wicket keepter Hayns took the catch at first slip. At this stage Wakes Colne were 24 for 4. A couple of hail storms made the wicket even lower and slower. Earls Colne fielded very well with with George Unwin making some impressive diving stops at cover (wouldn`t want to wash his trousers tonight) special praise to be mentioned for Alex Morrison making his debut for Earls Colne who bowled with maturity way beyond his years.Oliver Callaghan also bowled well 2 overs for 9 runs- but in the end Wakes Colne Captain Tristran Moxley and Maythams` partnership was enough to win the match for Wakes Colne and Chappel with Moxley scoring 50 not out ensuring them of the 95 runs needed and a 6 wicket win. The game was played in excellent spirit with friendly banter between the two teams. We look forward to our next match on May 20th at West Mersea.
Crazy season’s opener at Harwich
A game in which the pitch and the conditions were the main talking point, overshadowed a very low scoring game today at Harwich..in which EC lost by 30 runs, after having done the hard work in the first 45 overs.
Winning the toss and deciding to bowl on a damp squib, EC quickly made in roads into the Harwich batting line up..Joe Smith snaring the top 4 and Nick Oakley with his metronomic accuracy complimenting him from the other end reduced Harwich to 20 for 4 from 16 overs. The change bowlers of Ben Mason and Lee Parish kept up the good work sharing the wickets between them as we bowled Harwich out for 72.
After a downpour at tea and watching Horses fall at fences and chucking riders off before the main event at the National, we set about our reply.
After the downpour conditions were made around 10 times more difficult than the very, very difficult conditions experienced in Harwich’s innings, balls kept low, held up, popped up and practically talked as we were quickly 9 for 3 and 21 for 6. No EC players were at fault for their dismissials, a pitch that gave serious help to an accurate bowling attack made 72 look about as easy as climing Everest!. Only Lee Parish with 14 looked relativley comfortable, sadly we were all out for 42. Best to put this one to bed, forget about it and accept that none of us were really at fault for our dismissals, but freak conditions and a typical april weather scene made for a very, very low scoring game.

Work party – a rallying call from El Chairman!
Dear Club Members,
This is a reminder to club members and players to come down to the ground next Saturday 17th March morning to join our PRE-SEASON GROUND WORK PARTY!
Since last contacting you, there has been some amazing work done by Harry Callaghan, Adam Page, Ben Mason and Dave Brooker to clear the patch of ground between the shed and the clump of trees over on the far side. A free digger was brought in courtesy of Tarmec & used to level it out. Now we need at least another half dozen willing volunteers to help put in some hard standing with hard core & concrete.
At the same time we need another four bodies at least to repair, wash down & and paint the sight screens.
The more who volunteer, the more we can organise this work in shifts so the burden doesn’t fall on just a few sacrficing most of their Saturday.
I promise there will be bacon rolls and coffee/tea for those who turn up!

On Sunday the 1st and Sunday 8th April Earls Colne C.C will be holding two outdoor practice/net sessions at the pitch before the beginning of the Outdoor Season on the 14th April away at Harwich
